COMING ATTRACTIONS:
THE ART & HISTORY OF THE TRAILER

Synopsis: Enjoy a taste of some of the best films ever made in this unique look behind the scenes at the movies that make us go to the movies: the trailer.  How did they start, who makes them, what goes into them and how do they move us so? An informative exploration of this minimalist art  form with active Disney trailer editor Kira Burt and esteemed filmmaker, trailer editor and Oscar tribute legend Mike Shapiro, hosted by accomplished editor and Talbot Cinema Society founder Bill Gordean.

This event features a brief selection of Burt's work followed by Shapiro's film "Coming Attractions"  and a Q& A hosted  by Gordean.

Mike Shapiro - Filmmaker
As a studio executive, Shapiro served as MGM’s Creative Director, Worldwide Marketing Promotional Film Department, during the release of such landmark films as “200l: A Space Odyssey,” “The Dirty Dozen,” “Ryan’s Daughter,” and “Blow-up.”   After a stint in the same role as Columbia Pictures, he formed his own trailer company, Saraband Films, and personally  produced campaigns for such films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “The Deep,” “The China Syndrome” and “9 to 5.”   In l982, he formed Skyfire Productions, which developed campaigns for films including “Romancing the Stone,” Predator,” and “The Fly.”  In l986, Mike Shapiro was awarded the first Key Art Award ever given for a trailer, “The Jewel of the Nile.”

In the early ’90s, Shapiro began his work as a segment producer for the Academy Awards Show, contributing powerful film portions to 14 of the famously “live” international broadcasts.  Three times he has produced the opening of the program:  “From Outer Space to Steve Martin; “  “Oscar’s Diamond Anniversary” and, in 2006, in 2007 “Oscar City” and in 2008 the Opening “Oscar Truck”. Other segments that displayed his use of archival footage include: “Kirk Douglas Lifetime Achievement Tribute,” “Shakespeare in the Movies,” “Women Who Shaped the Movies,” “The Great Cinematographers,” “Physical Comedy in the Movies,” Cowboy Heaven,” “Oscar’s 70 Best Pictures,” “Vintage Special Effects,” and “Sidney Lumet Lifetime Achievement Tribute.”  Mike Shapiro is widely credited with refining and perfecting the Academy Award’s “In Memoriam,” an annual tribute which he has produced nine times. Mike is also the recipient of nine Emmy award nominations.

Kira Burt - Trailer editor
Kira Burt started in television commercial production at the age of 16. After graduating from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia in 1991 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Film, she eventually made her way to Hollywood and into motion picture and cable advertising.  Starting from the bottom as a production assistant, she quickly worked her way up to being a film editor and editing on campaigns such as “Gangs of New York”, “Cold Mountain” and the “Kill Bill” series. Branching out she worked on the premiere campaigns of such cable shows as “Nip/Tuck” and more recently the Disney Channel series “JONAS”.   Her latest project was to edit several different launch promos for Disney Channel’s weekend long airings of “Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie
