SHADOW OF THE HOUSE
with director Allie Humenuk
Director: Allie Humenuk
Release Date: 2008
Genre: Documentary
Plot: Filmmaker Allie Humenuk spent more than 6 years following Cuban-born photographer Abelardo Morell to create this intimate and honest document of one of Boston's most internationally recognized artists. (The first major exhibition of Morell's enveloping camera obscura images, "Abelardo Morell: The Camera Eye," took place at the MFA in 1999.) Candid glimpses and conversations allow the viewer to truly get to know this extraordinary man as an obsessed artist, a husband, and a father. Humenuk gains the photographer's complete trust during her long and often one-on-one shoots, which becomes evident in this unrestrained and honest portrait. We watch as Morell travels to Paris, where he has the vision to create his remarkable pinhole photographs in his hotel room. And we hear his son and daughter, both talkative and intelligent teens, providing their engaging commentary and criticism. Then we follow Morell on a recent emotional trip to Cubathe first time he's returned to his native land since fleeing as a teen in 1962.
